The Kitty (Alixe Kathleen) and Stanley Batts FamilyWilliams seventh daughter, Alixe Kathleen Watson, known as Kitty, was born on 24th February 1900. On the 29th July 1926 Kitty married Stanley George Batts at the Wesleyan Church, Broadway, Streatham, London. We are indebted to their daughter, Kate Byrne for the help and photographs that appear on this page. The picture below of Kitty is dated Christmas 1922. The one alongside is of her husband Stanley Batts with William Watson in his garden at Northallerton, but is unfortunately undated. Kitty was the first of the William Watson children to be allowed to train for a profession, as a teacher. She was also a qualified swimming instructor and a life saver, and used to help handicapped children in the local swimming baths. She was awarded a lifesaving medal in 1920. When Kitty married in 1926, she had to stop teaching as in those days, married women weren't allowed to teach.
The following picture is of 'Grandad' William Watson with the Batts children, Peter (Bill) Michael and Kathleen (Kate) The picture on the right is from 1930, and shows (l-r) Stanley Batts, Bill Batts, Betty Scollick (nee Scott), Bettys mother and father Violet and Arthur Scott (he of bagpipes fame !!). Michael Batts (son of Stanley & Kitty) is sitting on Arthurs knee. Finally we have a picture of Alixe from 1970 For the family tree go here |
