Why we started

When Wilfred Hector Watson died in 1989 there was amongst the possessions a large family bible. Typically for bibles of this nature, it contained a significant amount of family history and records.

Wilfred Hector Watson was one of a family of fourteen, two boys and 12 girls. He had only one son, my father, Wilfred Watson of Leyburn, North Yorkshire, which makes him the the last surviving male in the Watson line, descended from William Watson (1865-1952).

Where have we got to

My mother, Nan Watson has over the last few years, through writing to many of the relatives, built up an almost complete family tree. More recently we have been able to fill in some of the missing details, and then we have put together this site including many photographs and some snippets of the social history that surrounds the family.

Current Activity

Filling in the details
My interest is in the social history attached to the family. We have the structure of the family tree, but there are many details missing such as occupations, places of birth, marriage and death. I am hoping to be able to complete those details.

Researching The NZ/Australia Branch
There is a significant arm of the family in the Antipodes. It would be great to get in touch and find out when and why the family moved overseas...

Researching the Right Wing
If we go back two generations from Wilfred Hector Watson then we get back to Amos Watson (1843-1925). There is a big part of the tree that we have no contact with any of today's descendants.

The site would simply not be here were it not for the efforts and contribution of many of the Watson family. Thanks to everybody who has contributed and specifically to:

  1. Nan Watson, without whom we would simply not have started at all, and who pulled together the vast tree that we have.
  2. Peter Smith, who has provided many of the old photographs
  3. Kate Byrne who has filled in some of the gaps, and provided pictures
  4. Betty Scollick who has provide pictures, details and extensive memories of the William Watson family members
