The Violet and Arthur Scott FamilyWilliams second daughter, Violet Ethel Watson was born in 1890. In approximately 1915, Violet married Arthur Scott. The following photograph of Arthur Scott, husband of Violet, was taken in
the back garden of their home, Marycot, The Wayside, Hurworth-on-Tees. Their
bungalow was given this name in memory of their daughter. That was how she used
to pronounce her name. Thanks to Betty Scott, who remembers the events surrounding the picture quite vividly. "I love the one of my dad with his Scottish outfit on. You wont know how it was made up - we had a lovely time dressing him up! He wouldn't take his trousers off, so pulled them up over his knees. the kilt used to be his Fathers kilt, which for years had been made into a bed quilt for my bed., and the whitewash brush was his sporran! The top was an old purple jumper he used to wear in the garden, and my beret was on his head. The bagpipes were a pair of old long handled grass shears with the blades in a paper bag, and a wooden spoon made the mouthpiece. A travelling rug slung over his shoulder completed the outfit. My mother and I couldn't do anything for laughing as he kept saying ' hurry up my trouser legs are sliding down'."
The right hand picture above is Violet Scott with her first daughter. On reverse of photograph is written: “Kathleen Mary Scott. Taken on her second birthday. August 18th, 1918. Kathleen died just over a year later on September 22nd 1919. Their second daughter Betty Scott was born in 1921 and is photographed below left.
Above right we have a picture of Betty with her Grandmother, Mary Jane Watson (nee Lowe). Betty married married Lionel Austin Scollick in 1948 and we have a wedding photo below.
Betty is also pictured below as the WAAF on the right. Peter Smith identifies himself as "the shrimp in the front". This would have been taken at Blackpool during the war. On reverse is written “Right. Geoffs (Geoffrey Sylvester Smith) cousin Betty (Scott) Scollick.”. The second WAAF was someone who Betty met lost and lonely at Wilmslow reception base near Manchester. The women went though square bashing together and passed the test for Wireless Operations, before being posted to different air bases. They are still in touch today. The following picture was taken while Betty was in the RAF at Ramsey, Isle Of Man, in 1944. There is a prize of a pair of silk stockings if you can guess which one is Betty. The picture below left shows four generations of Violet Ethels family, William in the middle, Violet on the left, Betty Scollick on the right holding her son John and her daughter Ann standing at the front. The wedding picture in the middle was taken 13th June 1970, and shows Ann on her way to Church, escorted by her brother John
In the picture on the right we have Betty Scollick with her daughter, Ann in summer 2001 For the family tree go here |
